I enjoyed attending MMI's annual wine-tasting event in Dubai, a highlight in wine enthusiasts’ and hospitality professionals' calendars. As I mingled among the crowd, the air and the shared passion for wine were electric with anticipation. MMI, renowned for its expertise as one of Dubai's leading wine suppliers, had transformed the venue into a vintner's dream.
Each booth, showcasing wines from around the globe, was a portal to the vineyards and the people behind them.
The event wasn't just a tasting; it was a masterclass in the art of wine tasting, and as I moved from one booth to another, I felt a deep connection to the world of wine that MMI so expertly brought to life.

As I stood before their display, the variety of still wines from Niepoort was impressive and spoke volumes of their mastery over the art. Grape Varieties: Predominantly crafted from local grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz, these wines reflect the area's rich viticultural heritage.

White Wines:

Grape Varieties and Winemaking Techniques at Niepoort:
Niepoort, synonymous with innovation and quality in the Douro Valley, offers a fascinating glimpse into fine winemaking through its still wines, Redoma Branco (white) and Redoma Tinto (red).
Redoma Branco:
Grape Varieties: This white wine is a blend of grapes from old vines, predominantly Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, Viosinho, Donzelinho, and Gouveio, grown at an altitude of 400-600 meters along the right bank of the Douro River.
Soil Influence: The mica schist soils contribute significantly to the wine's minerality and elegance, imparting a vibrant freshness.
Winemaking Process: The grapes are carefully sorted, gently pressed, and then left to settle for about 24 hours. Alcoholic fermentation occurs spontaneously in 228L and 500L French oak barrels, where the wine lasts 8 months. This process enhances the wine’s complexity and texture, balancing the natural freshness with the subtle influence of oak.
Redoma Tinto:
Grape Varieties: The Redoma Tinto is primarily made from Tinta Amarela, among other local varieties, sourced from old vineyards in Quinta de Nápoles and the Pinhão Valley.
Climatic Influence: The 2018 vintage was marked by a cool start and a sudden rise in temperature in August, affecting the grapes' ripening process. The resulting wines exhibit lower alcohol content but with excellent phenolic ripeness, complexity, and resistance.
Winemaking Process: Without special sorting, whole bunches were transferred into stainless steel Lagares with mechanized stomping devices for maceration. After this, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in old wooden barrels, where it matures further. This traditional approach preserves the wine's authentic character and imparts a unique texture and depth.
The Redoma Branco and Redoma Tinto reflect Niepoort's commitment to expressing the true essence of the Douro's terroir. The meticulous winemaking process, combined with the region's unique climatic conditions and diverse grape varieties, results in wines that delight the senses and reflect the land and the winemaker's art.
