7 Habits of True Wine Connoisseurs: Insights from a Sommelier's Experience

As an advanced sommelier with extensive experience serving and tasting wine with wine connoisseurs, I have observed several common habits and skills among true wine connoisseurs. In this blog, I aim to share these observations with you and clarify what it takes to become a wine connoisseur. Please note that these are my personal insights and observations, and your journey to becoming a wine connoisseur may differ.

It's important to clarify that this blog will not be a step-by-step guide to becoming a wine connoisseur. Instead, it will highlight the habits and skills I have observed in true wine connoisseurs. In addition, for those interested in learning more about becoming a wine connoisseur, I have written another blog on this topic, as well as one discussing the difference between a sommelier and a wine connoisseur. I'll share seven of these habits and skills, providing insights and examples to help you understand what it takes to become a wine connoisseur.

So, without further ado, let's get started with the seven habits of a true wine connoisseur.

  1. Wine Students

Wine connoisseurs always learn about new wines, winemaking techniques, and wine regions. They are constantly expanding their knowledge and palate. I recall serving a wine connoisseur on a mission to try every wine from a specific region in France. He was knowledgeable about the wineries and the winemakers, and it was a delight to serve and educate him further. He shared his passion for learning about the history and culture behind each bottle of wine.

2. Love for Fine Dining

Wine connoisseurs appreciate good food and wine pairing. They enjoy going out to restaurants to try new dishes and wines. I have had the pleasure of serving a wine connoisseur who loved to try new restaurants and was always eager to try the chef's recommended wine pairings. He was a true epicurean and appreciated the art of dining and wine.

3. Love for Tasting Different Wines

Wine connoisseurs are always eager to try new and different wines. They enjoy the challenge of identifying each wine's various notes and flavors. One of my most memorable wine connoisseurs was a gentleman who was a collector of rare and unique wines. He had an extensive wine cellar and was always eager to share his collection with others. He was always looking for new and exciting wines to add to his collection and shared his passion for discovering new and unique wines with everyone he met.

4. They Have One or Two Specific Favorite Wine Regions

True wine connoisseurs often have a deep appreciation for the different regions that produce their favorite wines. They understand the unique characteristics of each region and how it influences the taste of the wine. For example, I once served a wine connoisseur who was a huge fan of Napa Valley Cabernets. He could describe in detail the flavors and aromas he detected in the wine and the specific wineries in Napa Valley that produced his favorite bottles. He was passionate about the region and its wines, which showed in his knowledge and appreciation.

5. They Love to Share Their Wine Experience

Wine connoisseurs are always eager to share their love of wine with others. They relish discussing the flavors, aromas, and regions that produce their favorite wines. In addition, they enjoy educating others about wine through formal wine tasting or a casual conversation over dinner. I recall serving a group of wine connoisseurs eager to taste various red wines from different regions. They were eager to share their opinions and insights with each other, making for a lively and informative evening.

6. They Know How to Talk About Wine

Wine connoisseurs are not only passionate about wine, but they also know how to talk about it. They understand the language of wine and can articulate the flavors, aromas, and other characteristics of the wine in a way that is both knowledgeable and engaging. In addition, they can describe the wine in a way that makes others appreciate it as well. For example, I once served a wine connoisseur who was describing a bottle of Pinot Noir. He was able to explain the flavors of dark fruit, spices, and earthy notes in a way that made everyone at the table eager to try a sip.

7. They Have a Passion for Wine

Wine connoisseurs have a true passion for wine. They are always eager to learn more about it and taste new and exciting bottles. They are driven by their love for wine, and it shows in their dedication to the craft. I recall serving a wine connoisseur who had traveled the world to visit different wineries and taste their wines. He was always eager to try new bottles and expand his knowledge of the wine world. His passion was truly inspiring, and it was clear that wine was a big part of his life.
